Inspiration Friday - Creative Space

There was a time about 5 years ago when this crafter was spoiled with a room JUST for scrapbooking. It had table space, shelving, and lots of space for all the hoarding behaviors of scrapbook addict- the paper, the punches, the stamps, the inks and so on. It also served as our home office with all the wonderful things that go along with it.

And then it happened… the doctor said I was expecting not one but TWO babies! Shock and awe ensued then it hit me, but what about my ROOM… Well I couldn’t let them sleep in the backyard… and I couldn’t add on a room to my home… so what is a scrapbooking addict to do?

All kidding aside, I knew the twins needed a bedroom but I hated not having my own space. I had to find a solution that we could all live with. I scanned the internet for ideas and finally found something that could serve as my creative space AND my office.

I found this armoire on Craigslist for a really decent price. We placed it in the corner of the living room and I’ve incorporated things I love that don’t make it look unsightly. And it has doors but it’s not like they ever get shut ;)

The vintage black lunch box holds my inkpads and an old sewing drawer holds mist, dyes, and tools. A tool caddy from Home Depot holds ribbon, embroidery threads, buttons, brads and other metal embellishments. The cases are totally portable for taking to crops.

If you are thinking there has to be more stuff, well yes there is… I also took over the coat closet for items I don’t use everyday- like the sewing machine, paper stash, old albums, and family heritage projects.

Someday I’d love a fabulous room just for creating, BUT for now I’m doing my best with what I have. And thankfully, my family doesn’t mind. Happy Scrapping!

Product Showcase - Product Tutorial

Today I want to share a product with you that has so many possibilities! You may have over looked it in the MemoryWorks Catalog so allow me to introduce you to Studio Multi-Medium in Matte. This little gem has been hiding out just waiting for you to discover it. There are numerous ways to use this product but today we are going to work with it as a resist. A resist is just what it sounds like, it resists ink or paint that you might put on it allowing the area around it to be colored and the area underneath to remain untouched.

For this example I will be using Studio Multi-Medium in Matte (size available through MemoryWorks is 0.5 fl oz), Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Vintage Photo, a Tim Holtz Tag, BasicGrey Curio paper, a stencil, a sponge dauber and a paint brush.

I began by covering the Tim Holtz tag with a piece of paper from the BasicGrey Curio Theme Set. Once the paper was attached and I trimmed the excess, I positioned my stencil (this stencil was created using a die cut machine) and used two small pieces of tape to hold it in place. Then I carefully applied a liberal amount of the Studio Multi-Medium.

Once I had a good layer of the Studio Multi-Medium on, I carefully removed the stencil and allowed the image to dry. I took this opportunity to add a few stamped images. After the resist dried completely, I used a sponge dauber to apply Distress Ink to the entire tag.

You can see how the resist did not pick up any of the ink allowing the shape of the stencil to really show through. You can also use this same technique with stamps but I would recommend foam stamps or images without a lot of detail and be sure to thoroughly clean your stamps afterwards.

This is how my completed tag turned out. I hope you have enjoyed getting to know Studio Multi-Medium in Matte a little better. I'm sure the two of you will become great friends!

Guest Designer Tues: Lynn's Organizing Tips!

Today I would like to share some ways that I repurpose containers to help organize my scrap-space. I like to use metal and wire baskets to store my tools and supplies. Most of these were purchased at a favorite local shop near my home, but some came from yard sales and Michael's. The tiered stand was only a dollar, or two, at a yard sale. It works great to hold scissors, adhesives, and other essentials. I keep it close to where I am working in my basement scrap-space. I will admit that I moved all these lovelies up to my home office for a photo shoot, for two reasons:
1. to get bright, natural light
2. to protect myself from being nominated for the show about hoarders!
This little basket holds seasonal or theme items that I'm currently working on, like these pink, Valentine-y accents. Now it is holding spring-colored ribbons and lots of flowers.

I like to use this basket for ribbons because I can see everything.
This wire basket was made to hold glass votive holders. I discovered it holds punches and edger-punches beautifully!

A girl can never have too many punches, right?
This metal basket is from Michael's. I covered it with patterned paper and stamped a label that says "NEW" on it. I keep my latest, up-to-date embellishments here. That way, if I have a workshop, crop, or party I can just grab this basket to show off the newest MemoryWorks goodies. Next time you see a wire basket or container you may want to grab it for your scrap-space. Thanks for stopping by!

Inspiration Friday - Team Member Mary Konow

Mary Konow has been a MemoryWorks Consultant since November 2007 and is very excited to be on the TeamWorks Team for a third year in a row. As a full-time stay-at-home mom, she fell in love with MemoryWorks because of the exclusive products and stress-free business model. Since starting scrapbooking over 11 years ago, she has loved creating countless scrapbook pages, one of a kind cards, and home decor items.

Many of her creations comprise the inventory for her online Etsy store. With creative ideas stewing in her head, she has been known to burn dinner because she was caught up in creating. Her other hobbies include watching Dirty Jobs on Discovery Channel and reading every novel in her growing Nancy Drew collection. When she is not on playing with papers and ribbon, she is taking care of her wonderful high school math teacher husband, and chasing after her 6 year old daughter and 3 ½ year old boy/girl twins.

Here's a simple double page layout I created using the Crate Paper Snow Day Theme Set:

I accented the pages with the super cute AND super EASY Crate Paper Chipboard Accents- I LOVE THESE!!!

I hope you liked my layout- stay tuned for more projects coming soon! Happy Scrappin!

Product Showcase - Introducing Jade Wilson

Jade Wilson resides in Knoxville, Tennessee and has been scrapbooking for 15 years and crafting for over 20. She has been a consultant for MemoryWorks since 2010 and 2011 marks her first year as a member of TeamWorks. Scrapbooking and paper crafting are a means of artistic expression, life documentation and a business for Jade. Believing that each photo and story has its own style, you will always see a variety of styles and techniques in Jade’s work. When she is not busy with life as a stay at home mom to an “always-on-the-go” two year old, Jade enjoys old movies (especially anything with Audrey Hepburn), reading and working with her favorite MemoryWorks products like Distress Inks, stamps and anything from My Mind’s Eye, Cosmo Cricket, Fancy Pants or Pink Paislee.

It is such a tremendous honor to join the TeamWorks team for 2011! I’m excited to share ideas and projects with you, so let’s get started!

Recently, I created this 3 Drawer Mini Organizer and Mini Cards (the drawers are perfect for brads, flowers or even chocolate) using paper and brads from the Crate Paper School Spirit Theme Set.

I also created this 12x12 layout of my husband and daughter using the Fancy Pants Lilac House Theme Set.

I hope you enjoyed checking out these projects I created. I have so many more ideas to share with you so I hope you will plan on joining me for even more creative projects and ideas!
