Using Hardware Items for Embellishments

How many of you have leftover hardware pieces from furniture? I think we all do. Instead of throwing them out, use them in your scrapbooking or papercrafting projects. This week I'll show you how to alter washers and keys along with the Cropper Hopper Paper Holder.

Non-MW Products Used:
--Tim Holtz: Distress Ink in Broken China
--Washers: any size from around the house (I used 1/8” X 1”, ½”, and 3/8” from Home Depot—packs of 2 and 3 for thirty-some cents)
--Key: old one around the house

To decorate/embellish the washers and keys, I did the following:

Step 1:
Gather supplies.
Step 1

Step 2:
Apply Rub-on of choice onto washers and key.
Step 2a

If the rub-on hangs off of item a little, I wrapped the rub-on to the sides carefully with my finger nail.
Step 2b

Step 3:
Apply Glossy Accents to seal the rub-ons to the metal. The Glossy Accents also gives it a little shine. Allow to dry. Embellish and add to project.
Step 3aStep 3b

I saw the washers a few years back on Memory Makers website. I used some different products than what they used. This shows you how you can add your own touch to instructions for a project. You can attach the washers and key with a brad or use a button in the center hole.

Cropper Hopper Paper Holder
For the Cropper Hopper Paper Holder, I cut the cardstock and paper in half. I inked the edges of all the papers and cardstock. I adhered the Joy Die Cut Paper to the blue side of the Strip Paper using the Strip Adhesive Runner. I stamped desired images onto the cardstock and applied the letter sticker on Die Cut Paper. I then adhered the paper and cardstock to the Paper Holder using the Solid Adhesive Runner. I attached the ribbon with the wide double-sided tape. I added a journaling block and flowers to the front of the Paper Holder.

This project combined the old products with the new products that MemoryWorks carry. I love the new adhesive runners. FYI: when using the adhesive runners, make sure you don’t lay it down on the same color cardstock you are using. I did that with the Solid Runner and it “blended” in with the green cardstock and it took me a few minutes to find the runner. LOL.

Papercrafting and Simple Stories

As you all know MemoryWorks launched their new exclusive line in January called Simple Stories.  The first kit in the line is Life Documented.  I finally bought the kit and decided that I wanted to do something different with it.  I chose to make a journal out of it rather than a scrapbook.  You can also use scraps from the kit to make the journal I am going to show you.  My journal was made using a composition book that you can buy at Wal-Mart for about $1.24, then of course add the paper from the kit and any embellishments you would like.  All total the project cost is below $10.00.  It also makes a wonderful gift for a friend or loved one.

Here is what I did for my Life Documented journal:

I took a regular composition book like the one pictured here:

Then I took two coordinating papers from the Life Documented kit and covered the front and back of the composition book as seen here:

I covered the front and back with the same paper.  After I covered the front and back I embellished the journal with elements and alphabets from the Life Documented kit and added a few items that were not part of the kit.

Here is what the project looks like for now:

I used some of the downloadable elements on the strip in the center of the journal.  Added some flowers in the circle on the bottom of the page and the scalloped dot strip from the kit.  This is what my journal looks like right now.  I am hoping to embellish it further and add dividers inside with tabs but again this is a project that you can customize for you or your friend or loved one.  It is a cost effective project and easy to make.  In just a few hours you can have a personalized journal for you or a gift for someone else.  If your interested in purchasing the Life Documented Kit by Simple Stories you can purchase it by contacting your local MemoryWorks Consultant here.

I hope you have enjoyed the project shown and hope that you take this idea and create one for yourself.
Have a scrappy happy day!!

Wendy's Corner - "Simple Stories...Life Documented + Essentials"

"Wendy's Corner"
Simple Stories "Life Documented" + Essentials

I simply cannot say enough about the exclusive new product line from Memory Works "Simple Stories".
There is seriously SO MUCH product packed in this kit that I not only created this first project mini book "Life Is Sweet With You" but enough product left to create this mini book titled "Life Documented...Love Italy".

This project is not yet finished (planning to finish it up this weekend with pics & jazzing it up with "my style" & will share the full reveal later).
However, I just wanted to share with you a walk-through part of my process in creating this fun mini book using the Simple Stories "Life Documented" kit along with LOTS of other product in my stash :)

(1) I like to gather the product I plan to use for the project.  I sit and go through all my rubons, stickers, papers, page protectors (cut to size of papers/book), buttons, all the Simple Stories bits & pieces left over from my previous book, etc. that fit within the theme & pictures I plan to use in the book.  I even sketch out ideas on paper, words that come to mind, memories, etc. that all help me in putting together my way of thinking for the project.

(2) I'm IN LOVE with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist & soooo happy we will have it in the new Memory Works catalog! I used the Tattered Leather Glimmer Mist on the chipboard word "love" below.  You can see how the mist has a hint of "glimmer" after being sprayed (you can click on the photo to enlarge for detail).  I really like the distress of this color on the chipboard and the subtle glimmer.

**Note:  I will be starting a new video series coming soon this Spring here on the Memory Works blog that will demo LOTS of new ideas, use of tools & product, cool techniques, etc. including how to use the Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist ;-)  So, stay tuned :)

I also use the word "love" above as a mask on this Creative Imaginations Creative Cafe tag

+ a spritzing of Glimmer Mist before adhering to the cover of the book.
I love to think of the versatility of product - so a 2-for-1 here :)

(3) I always keep a bottle of Ranger Glossy Accents in my stash.  One bottle goes a long way too! ;-)

You can use it for so many things but my favs are for 3-D items - such as chipboard words, letters - that need that extra bit of reinforcement. Some items might already be self-adhesive but I use Glossy Accents to reinforce those items (due to all the hands that will admire & look at your finished project & you don't want all those bits & pieces falling off over time).   It is a clear, glossy medium used to accent, brighten, magnify, dimensionalize, bond & protect embellishments.  It dries clear & dries fast (I liked to add) because typically withint 1-2 min the bond is set.  I always use it for those items attached to the outside of a book - words, letters, metal, etc.

(4) I also plan to attach this metal frame to the cover but plan to include a mini photo inside (and have yet to decide on the pic but you will see in the full reveal later this weekend :-)) and apply Ranger Crackle Accents.  Crackle Accents is a one-step, dimensional, gloss medium that dries to a cracked finish. Use to accent and protect rubber stamped images, decorative cardstock, clip art, die cuts, ephemera, stickers, chipboard letters, jewelry blanks and bottle cap art. Dries to a hard transparent finish, and also works as a glue.

(5) Using the Tim Holtz Edge Distresser to distress/"age" the edges of my tags.
I loveeeeee this distresser!  In case you didn't know...the blades are deely in-groove (a great safety) & the blades are not to go dull ;-)  I was informed of this last point from a very reliable source {clearing my throat...Mr TH himself ;-)} Seriously, I have used other edge distressers and this one is definitely THE BEST!  A definite must have for your scrap stash :)

(6) Forget popsicle sticks you get with those packs of rubons...I always have on hand my rub-on tool! It has just has this tiny ball (on one end) that gives the right amount of pressure to apply rubons like "butta'" *haha* Also, the flat end can be used for those larger size rubons for the same effect.
We carry this one from We R Memory Keepers.

here are a few more sneak peeks of the project in the works...

full reveal will coming early April.

xo & happy scrapping!
